Vertical air velocities are a key to the formation and persistence of marine stratus.  Upward transport of vapor from the ocean surface and entrainment-forced downdrafts are the dominant elements of this complex phenomenon.  Radar depictions of these air motions provide the first clear (albeit still incomplete) picture of these events.
