Progress in the parameterization of the aerosol indirect effect on climate.

Dr. J.L. Brenguier, Meteo-France,

Coordinator of the ACE-2 CLOUDYCOLUMN and PACE project

CLOUDYCOLUMN, one of the five projects in the second aerosol characterization experiment took place in June-July 1997 in the Canary Islands. Designed as a closure study, the field campaign involved in situ measurements of the aerosol physical and chemical properties, cloud microphysics and cloud radiative properties. Following the analysis of the CLOUDYCOLUMN experiment, the PACE project (Parameterization of the Aerosol Climatic Effect) brings together experimentalists from Météo-France, the University of Wyoming DAS, the Universities of Berlin and Warsaw, and climate modellers.

Results of the closure study will be presented as well as the design of the initialisation data set for the simulation of the selected case studies. Numerical experiments will be discussed to show the obstacles and preliminary results in the simulation of the aerosol indirect effect.
