Lead pollution

E. Linacre

10/'98

Until recently lead (Pb) was added to car fuel because it allowed better combustion, making engines more fuel-efficient. However lead, released in the air through car exhausts, does not readily react, and it can be absorbed into the bloodstream when inhaled. Although leaded fuel is no longer sold in the developed world, lead pollution has damaged the intelligence of 10% of British children, 17% in USA (1). Some industries also emit lead, especially in developing countries.
