Development of the Palmen-Newton model of the general circulation of the atmosphere

E. Linacre

5/'98

A good review of the personalities (in the USA) involved in developing ideas on the General Circulation of the troposphere was written by Lewis (1). It deals with the war period until 1956. Rossby used a three-cell model in 1941. The existence of jet streams had bee established by German forecasters in the late 1930’s, and immediately after the war Palmen proposed the subtropical jet. Various controversies of the time were outlined.
