Foreign language examinations

A common feature of written examinations of a student’s ability in a foreign language is an essay question on some unexpected topic. It is not easy to prepare for such a question, which is why it is set. However a method which proved successful on at least two occasions involves preparing a description of a STORM, which can be worked into essays of the most diverse kinds, with many purple passages and idiomatic flourishes to impress the examiner. An example follows.

It began with an unusual calm gently settling in the valley, as the air became still and creatures hushed. There followed a slow stealthy darkening from behind the mountains, so that one’s breath gradually tightened with apprehension. All nature paused, waiting. Then, on a mountain top nearby, there was a jolt of piercing blazing light like a sword from the sky, and a few seconds later we heard the rumbling of thunder. A pause followed, to be interrupted by another thunderbolt. The bolts came increasingly often, becoming a barrage of crashing sound. We relaxed under a gentle sprinkling of rain. Suddenly a monstrous clap of lightning, together with the deafening sound thunder, made us quiver. This bolt was echoed by the hillside, and re-echoed down the valley, finally rippling to faint applause in the far ranges. An abrupt coldness in the air accompanied a violent increase of the wind amidst the turbulence, and bushes flayed the ground. Then, unexpectedly, the heavens opened and a deluge fell on the streaming hillside.
