Notes ================================================================================ * All WCR data product files (processed data) are in NetCDF and are cataloged above. Additional information about the variables and attributes in the files is provided in the netcdf prototype file RICO04.20050804.cdl. * The data files are saved in directories (mmmDD) representing the month and date of the flight using the WCR. If there is more than one flight a day with WCR data they are ordered by adding a,b,... to the directory name. ATTENTION: If you are reading these notes via the WCR RICO04 project web page the processed data directories/files are available for download via the web. The access is password protected. * Revision history: = RevisionDate: 5 Aug 2005 = RevisionNumber = 3 = Revision_1: Preliminary version; generated during the field campaign = Revision_2: Reflectivity and Corrected Doppler velocity = Revision_3: Two profiles averaging removed for Jan 2005 processed data = ProcessAuthor: Samuel Haimov (haimov@uwyo.edu, atsc-cc@uwyo.edu) Revision_3 affects the radar data collected during January 2005 flights only. All processed files for the data collected in December 2004 are in Revision_2 * Known specifics of the data in this revision: = Some of the processed data files contain uncorrected for aircraft(AC) motion Doppler data and lack other variables requiring AC data. This is due to missing AC data. Such files contain 'no_KAdata' string in their names and a revision attribute: Revision_2: Reflectivity and uncorrected Doppler velocity = There are a few occasions when the reflectivity/velocity data are missing for a short time due to faults in the receiver/transmitter hardware. These are obvious in the parts where a target is present. = The WCR time stamps were corrupted during the flight on 15 Jan 2005 from 15:46:34 to 16:35:03 UTC. The time stamps were corrected and the processed data is recorded in a separate file as shown in the catalog. = The radar sensitivity on a profile-by-profile basis and one standard deviation above the receiver mean noise is recorded for each active beam as netcdf variables 'hsnoise' and 'vsnoise'. The reflectivity data is not noise thresholded beyond removing the receivers mean noise (recorded in the variables hmnoise and vmnoise). This is acknowledged in the reflectivity variables (hh and vv) status attribute (status = "mean noise subtracted, no threshold applied"). Doppler velocity data (dv) is also not noise thresholded. Note: The radar sensitivity during RICO was about 15 dB below normal with the minimum detectable signal at 1 km approx. -13 to -21 dBZ. = Large part of the reflectivity data contain strong attenuation due to significant water content in the clouds and in the precipitation regions. = The Doppler data after Jan 1, 2005 occasionally exhibit folded velocity regions. This is a result of using narrower unambiguous Doppler width (lower pulse-repetion-frequency,prf) during the second IOP. The foldings (to the best of my knowledge) are all single foldings. Simple routines to unfold the Doppler velocities for individual clouds can be used. If you can run IDL, the routine wcrwunfold.pro from my WCRTOOLS library (http://www-das.uwyo.edu/wcr/mmradar.wcrtools.shtml) can be used, most of the time, to successfully unfold the velocity in a specific data segment. * Known corrupted data not fixed in this revision: = All Doppler data from RICO experiment are contaminated by a range dependent bias. The origin of the problem is an interference via the +15V DC power supply for the 15.6 GHz PLO. The nature of the interference is not known and no universal correction is currently available. ================================================================================
