WCR configuration: WCR is installed on NSF/NCAR C130 with 3-antenna configuration: Antenna 1 2,4 and no polarization capability. Antenna ports are: Ant1 (up) - H1, Ant2 (near nadir) - V2, Ant4 (down-aft) - H2; H/V stands for the receiver used (there are 2 receivers). Cross-polarization channels (hxvx and vxhx) have no meaning for this configuration. Notes: This is the first installation of UW the new Wyoming Cloud Radar (sometime referred to as WCR2). ................................................................................ Radar Status/Problems * Frequent warning (TTL high) for 2.8 MHz LO and occasionally other LOs (probably too sensitive TTL line) * A crude dependence between the flight altitude and the Doppler velocity bias for the down beam and possibly (but not confirmed) the down-aft beam. For the down beam a correction close to 0.3 deg forward (from 2.1 deg aft to 1.8 deg aft) reduces the bias for flight altitudes of about 4 km or higher. This analysis was done before new pitch and roll bias adjustments in the C130 data files were introduced. The INS attitude corrections did not affect this bias and it remains up to +0.3deg correction for the x/z beam-angle components of the down beam. * Pitch and Roll corrections were introduced and all aircraft data re- processed on December 21. The final pitch and roll offsets are -0.23 deg and -0.75 deg, respectively. The roll bias is based on mechanical measurements of IRU (ins) installation horizontal offset of 0.56 deg and 0.2 deg horizontal offset for both up and down antennas (measured and reported by Allan Schanot) * A problem with radar control board (more likely) or EMS switch network. Spontaneously (no any apparent reason) the H1 (up) and H2 (down-aft) received signals get severely attenuated most likely due to incorrect EMS switching. For the most part the H2 return does not show up anywhere, while the H1 return shows up in the H2. Starting a new file or restarting the radar fix the problem. * A few crashes of the radar server occurred. * All beams appears to be affected by elevated noise of about 0.1 dB for up to first 100 range gates. The very first few range gates may not be affected. * A small diminishing with range bias of less than 0.1 m/s has been noticed in the first (~10) range gates * Notes for specific flights: ______ Oct 15 = found cracked up-antenna port rexolite window ______ Oct 19 = test flight 1: up-antenna port not available; ntp server and GPS problems in the aircraft data - no Doppler correction ______ Oct 21 = test flight 2: up-antenna port not available; problem with aircraft datasystem - no Doppler correction ______ Oct 23 = test flight 3: new up-antenna port rexolite window installed ______ Nov 03 = Larry ran today up to 7 display clients (wcrdisp): 4 on ermine and 1 each on 3 c130 linux stations. = It appears that at least up to 7 display clients do not affect noticeably the loads of the CPU cores = Memory leak caused system crash twice and the only stable recovery was by rebooting. = C130 data system down from 20:43:34 to 20:58:23 ______ Nov 04 = This was a maintenance day. Larry and Sam investigated the memory leak. It was found that the leak starts when 'recording' is selected. ______ Nov06 = Ferry flight to Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN - tested memory leak when recording and antenna coupling. Memory leak is present in all tested confgurations: a) new linux kernel and new wcrserver; b) old linux kernel (old ECDR210 driver) and new wcr server, and c) old kernel and old wcrserver = Testing antenna coupling with an absorber blocking different beams ______ Nov10 = Ferry flight to University of Winsconsin, Medison - tested memory leak. Larry reported that the memory leak is equal to the size of the recorded file ______ Nov11 = Ferry flight to Purdue University - tested memory leak It appears that the leak is to the cache memory and it may be the way the OS handles the use of the I/O. There also appears to be a small leak in the resident memory, but it is too little to cause any problem = During the recording after ~18:10:38 the down-slant beam got severely attenuated (more than 40 dB). At that time the return in the up beam showed a weak signal from the down beam surface return in addition to the down-slant beam leak to the up beam. The return in the down beam was fine. The noise level in the up beam data increased slightly after the event (~0.25 dB), while the down-slant beam noise in the data decrease by about the same amount. Noise data for both beams, however, were fine - no change after the event (not a receiver problem). Velocities from all returns were coherent (no shift by one pulse). The problem is either with the RCB or the EMS network. The solution for the problem is to stop the file and start a new one. This causes the RCB (and perhaps, but not likely, the EMS network) to be reset, which fixes the problem. ______ Nov13 = About 17:29:30 - H1 and H2 beams got messed up: the signal from H1(up) showed up in H2; the signal from H2 disappeared and H1 has no cloud return, but some surface 2nd trip echo ______ Nov24 = The end of WCR-20091124-174904 H1/H2 beam/port switch problem = The end of WCR-20091124-181600 radar server crash (restart server) = The end of WCR-20091124-212052 H1/H2 beam/port switch problem (hit 'apply' to fix - start a new file) = The end of WCR-20091124-220619 radar server crash (reboot ferret) = C130 processed data has gaps (most likely will be fixed) during the following times: 171222 - 171633 194127 - 194607 194750 - 203218 (this is the longest one) 214806 - 215028 215141 - 215429 222050 - 222146 222259 - 223707 010756 - 011310 This affects the preliminary radar processed data. The corrected Doppler velocity and all other aicraft dependent variables in the processed data files are incorrect during these time segments ______ Dec02 = C130 flew at 26kf. The low-loss waveguide displacement increased a bit more than at lower altitudes, but no noticeable distortion to the attached WR10 waveguide. = C130 data not available from the beginning until ~21:14:30 ______ Dec08 = WCR server crashed once; ferret had to be re-booted ______ Dec14 = Jeff French reported that about 2 hours into the flight the radar server quit recording and quit running the radar. The recovery included disconnecting the control gui, connecting again and run the radar again (no rebooting or re-starting of the radar server) = Analysis of the hot/warm load ratio showed a decreased performance of the V-receiver. The noise figure increased by about 2 dB and the receiver gain decreased by about 2 dB ______ Jan13 = ground tests at RAF; running, SPP, transmitting via up antenna; very thin clouds, probably at ~24-25kft, not seen by the radar; the only issue noticed is the mean noise of Hrx, which was more than 2 dB below the usual level even after worming up for more than an hour ______ Jan14 = ferry flight from Jeffco to Peoria. Larry reported unusual return from the side slant beam and occasionally from the up beam; side-slant beam showed reduced noise in the image, while, in few instances the up beam showed increased noise in the image. The radar worked fine in the beginning, had problems in the middle and recovered before the end of the flight. Larry did several attempts to recover by restarting the radar and the whole system from power off, but was unsuccessful - the recovery occurred without any operator intervention. Summary from the data analysis: > The Hch(for both H1 and H2) problem starts:175230 H1noise increased monotonically(in about 40 sec) from -65.7 to -64.3 !!!! cause could be slant-beam leakage to H1 at noise gate H1data,gates w/ noise only: from -66.05 to -63.55 => NOT OK H2noise: from -65.7 to -64.3 => NOT OK !!!! cause could be 2nd trip ground echo at noise gate H2data,gates w/ noise only: -65.87 => OK V2noise steady -63.7 (for all data files deviated <0.5 dB) => OK V2data, gates w/ noise only: -63.7; ; few spikes => OK > H1 recovers:175615, H2-not recovered; Conditions: close range clouds, no 2nd grnd trip H1noise after 175550 monotonicaly increased from -64.3 to -63.5 H1data, gates w/ noise only: -63.52 to -63.50 H2noise steady at -64.3 ; H2data, gates w/ noise only: steady at -65.87 There was no change in behavior until 191030 > H1 went bad again: ~191030, H2-not recovered H1noise decreased steeply (in about 10 sec) from -62.5 to -64.0 H2noise was steady at -64.0 > H1 and H2 both recovered: ~191310 H1noise decreased steeply from -64.0 to -65.7 dBm H2noise acted exactly as H1noise and also decreased to -65.7 last dropsonde launched ~1912; finished dropsonde work ~1913 c130 made turn ~1913 and the recovery of H1 and H2 coincided with the end of the turn. = Throught the flight Vrx showed steady noise but unsteady NF and G The noise figure started aroud 7dB in the beginning of the flight and ended by the end of the flight as high as 14 dB. The NF and G for Hrx were much steadier and in fact during the problem with H1 and H2 it dropped. So, it started also at about 7 dB (typically always at least 0.5 dB better than NF for Vrx), dropped to about 5.5dB in the middle of the flight and went back up with the highest not exceedin 10 dB. As in all data before the gain, G, was fully anti-correlated with NF. ______ Jan16 = One instance of wrong port switching = Several instances of the up/down-slant beam noise problem (data similar to what is shown for Jan 14) ______ Jan29 = Several instances of the up/down-slant beam noise problem ______ Feb01 = Several instances of the up/down-slant beam noise problem ______ Feb04 = Several instances of the up/down-slant beam noise problem ______ Feb08 = Several instances of the up/down-slant beam noise problem = one wrong-port switching ______ Feb09 = Several instances of the up/down-slant beam noise problem' the Hrx noise level was mostly at -65.5 dBm = Jeff reported ~5 dB difference between the down and down-slant beam reflectivities (the noise drop for down-slant was 2-3 dB) ______ Feb15 = Jeff reported that about 15 mins into the flight the Hrx noise level dropped from -63.5 to -65 dBm ______ Feb18 = Jeff reported that during the feryy to the calibration site the Hrx noise was at -63.5 dBm (no data recorded) and before starting the calibration maneuvers it dropped to -65.5 dBm ______ Feb21 = Hrx noise stayed at -63.5 until 01:32:30 then dropped to -65.5 with a short recovery to -63.5 between 01:42-01:44 ______ Feb26 = Jeff reported a few changes in the Hrx noise between -65 and -63 after which it stayed at -63.5 till the end of the flight ______ Mar01 = Jeff reported a few changes in the Hrx noise between -65 and -63 and 3 wrong port switchings (very little loss of data) ______ Mar02 = Hrx noise mostly at -65.5 ______ Mar08 = Larry reported one Fault 2; recovered after modulator power. First 2/3 of the flight Hrx noise at -63.5 then till the end at -65. One wrong port switching. ................................................................................ General Notes: * Quick look images of reflectivity and Doppler veocity for all the flights are stored on the project WCR web site in their corresponding directories (mmmDD) as mostly pdf files. Currently the pdf converter cannot handle more than 65k profiles and in these cases the quick look files are converted to png. * WCR raw data is archived on a disk array in the UW DAS and a mass storage at NCAR. Quicklooks, dataquality, and calibration data are also archived. Radar processed data files in NetCDF format are available usually within 2 months after the conclusion of the experiment (preliminary version is generally available during the field campaign). The NetCDF files are available via the Internet. They may be protected with a password. Contact the PI for access. ................................................................................ Calibration notes: **************************************************************************** Power Calibration: * Calibration constants used for the quick look images (200 ns pulse, 5 MHz IF filter): Ant. 1 (H1,up), H1cal1 = 46.0 calibrated relative to V2 Ant. 2 (V2,nadir), V2cal2 = 39.5 calibrated using corner reflector Ant. 4 (H2,down-aft), H2cal2 = 40.5 calibrated relative to V2 * Notes: 1) Down antennas port rexolite window thickness: 0.4965"+-0.001" (0.495" optimal theoretical). 2) Up antenna port rexolite window thickness: 0.430"+-0.0005" (0.430" optimal theoretical) 3) The absolute accuracy of the calibration constant for the "down" antenna (V2, near-nadir) is not available at this time due to insufficient statistical data. The precision of the calibration from the corner reflector is within 1.5 dB. 4) The accuracy of the calibration constant for the "down-aft" antenna (H2) is not available at this time due to insufficient statistical data. Cloud data are used for relative calibration of this antenna w.r.t nadir antenna. Slanted antenna is mostly intended for Doppler velocities. 5) The accuracy of the power calib. for the "up" antenna (H1) is not well established due to larger uncertainties in its relative calibration w.r.t. the nadir beam returns and lack of direct CR calibration. 6) Saturation of the digital receivers at close range for strong weather targets: The data from the first several range gates (up to ~300 m) may be saturated for the 2 down-pointing antennas V2 and H2 when the cloud/precip return exeeds approximately +22 dBZ. 7) Cross-channel/antenna isolation is greater than 50 dB: **************************************************************************** Beam angles calibration: * Unit beam angles(in AC coordinates) for this experiment as of 31 Jan 2008 X(along AC) Y(right wing) Z(down) Ant. 1 (up): 0.0436195, 0.0, -0.9990482 Ant. 2 (nadir): -0.0310492, -0.001, 0.99951735 Ant. 4 (down-fore): -0.5771, 0.011, 0.8166 The accuracy of the beam angles for 'up' beam is not known due to lack of calib data. The accuracy of the down beams is within 0.4 deg. C130 maneuvers for beam calibration should be done with the following considerations in mind: = minimum turbulence at flight level = 3000 ft AGL flight level = running shallow coordinated turns (typically 25-27 deg roll on autopilot) to minimize load on the tail, which is likely affecting the ramp (where the radar down-pointing antennas are installed) beyond what is reported by the INS and the calculated arm moment. = flat terrain with no ponds/lakes = no precipitation reaching the surface detected by the radar ................................................................................ Other notes: * WCR data acquisition system (DAQ) records time stamps from the vxi IRIG card which is slaved to the master C130 data system time server. The recorded time stamps are UTC time. * The zero range gate (first data gate) is about 105 m (for 250 ns pulse). The far field for the two 12" down-pointing antennas is 60 m and the far field for the 15" up-pointing antenna is 91 m. * When maximum unambiguous range is 7.5 km and the aircraft flies AGL close to that range the data can be contaminated from second trip surface echoes. * Antenna Coupling Separation is better than 50 dB, but still less than the radar dynamic range. Coupling between down and down-aft antenna (leak into the down-aft return) as well as between up and down-aft antenna (leak into the up return) are present for strong targets (mostly surface returns). ................................................................................
