VOCALS-REx Observations and Preliminary Analysis

David Leon
University of Wyoming

VOCALS-REx, which took place in October-November 2008, is the first comprehensive study of the South-Eastern Pacific (SEP) stratocumulus region. The SEP Sc region is distinguished from other subtropical Sc regions, such as the extensively studied region off the west coast of California, by its extent and by the greater depth of the boundary layer (typically > 1km). UWYO investigators deployed several instruments on the NSF/NCAR C-130 including: the Wyoming Cloud Radar (WCR) and Wyoming Cloud Lidar (WCL) which allow us to depict the structure of the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer and the Wyoming CCN counter and an ultrafine CPC used to characterize the aerosol spectrum in and above the boundary layer.  Observations and preliminary analysis of data from VOCALS-REx will be presented along with a discussion of the motivation and scientific goals of the project.
