Real-Time Measurement of Liquid Equivalent Snowfall Rate using Ground Based Gauges

 Roy Rasmussen

NCAR/RAL

The real-time measurement of the liquid equivalent snowfall rate is important for various applications such as aircraft deicing, roadway snow clearing and avalanche warning. This seminar will discuss results of an evaluation of various snowgauges and wind shield combinations from 15 years of data collected at the NCAR/Marshall test site.  New technology developments such as the hotplate snowgauge will also be discussed.  Specific application of this technology to aircraft ground deicing will also be made, including discussion of a real-time winter weather nowcasting system called Weather Support to Deicing Decision Making (WSDDM).
