International student applications

An international tradition

Over 300 international students attend the University of Wyoming. International students and staff and their families constitute about 5% of the population of Laramie. They are mainly from Asian and European countries. The University hosts many programs for international students and the International Student Services will assist you with visa requirements. The Department of Atmospheric Sciences frequently plays host to faculty, students, and visiting researchers from many countries from around the world. In the last decade, individuals working in the department have included scientists and students from Greece, France, The Netherlands, Turkey, Switzerland, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil, China, Bulgaria, Hungary, Canada, Ethiopia, Kenya, India, and Saudi Arabia.

Our M.S. and Ph.D. programs

The Department of Atmospheric Science encourages applications to our graduate program, from qualified candidates from nations worldwide. Successful students start the M.S. graduate program at the beginning of the Autumn semester, in August. At the time of admission, they should have at least earned a 4-year university degree (equivalent to the Bachelor's degree) with a 75% ("B") average or better in a science or engineering discipline. Students in the final stages of completing their undergraduate program can submit an application for consideration prior to graduation, however admission is only permitted following the award of their 4-year university degree. Many successful applicants have earned a Honours or Diploma degree in their home country, in addition to their basic university degree.

Most of our applicants have degrees in physics, engineering, geophysics, or mathematics. We also encourage applicants with expertise in meteorology, environmental science, chemistry, and other relevant disciplines. A solid background in science is the best preparation, and proven aptitude for scientific work is the best qualification.

Ph.D. applicants will have completed, or expect to complete before admission, a M.S. degree in a relevant physical science discipline, that includes the conduct of research and the writing of a thesis or dissertation. At least the extended abstract of the thesis should be in English. Some applicants to our Ph.D. program have completed a doctoral degree in their home country.
