Computer resources in Atmospheric Science at the University of Wyoming
Computer Accounts
You will have three computer accounts: the University, the Engineering College, and the Atmospheric Science Linux computers. Each account can have separate
passwords.
When students are admitted or the paperwork for new employees is completed,
a username will be assigned by the University. The user accounts on the
Linux computers in the Department use the same username.
Once you obtain your UWYO account, you can have Jim Waldram (EN-6020)
or Larry Oolman (EN-6016) create an account on the Atmospheric Science
Linux computers.
The Engineering College account should be generated automatically for you.
Try using your last name as your account name and your 'W' number as
your password. Make sure you enter the W number with a capital 'W'. You will
need to change your password the first time you log in. If there are
duplicate names, your last name will be appended with a number, i.e.
smith1, smith2, etc. If you are unable to log in, the student helper should
be able to look up your account name.
Disk Space
Your disk space will be primarily in two places. The University allocates
a small amount of disk space (maybe 1 GB) to each student. This is on a
windows share: \\windows.uwyo.edu\student\storage\yourusername. In the
student labs, this gets mounted on the H: drive.
You are also allocated 2 GB on the Department's Linux server. This is available
as a windows share: \\batcivet\yourusername. This is also your home directory
when you log on to one of the Department's Linux computers.
Mounting shares from a windows computer
Student Lab
In the student lab, your UWYO disk space will be on the H: drive.
To mount one of the Department shares from the student lab:
Start->My Computer
Select the 'Tools' tab -> Mount Network Drive.
You should set 'Folder:' to'\\batcivet\yourusername'.
Other shares on \\batcivet may also be available for classes or research.
The drives you have mounted should appear in the 'My Computer' window.
Engineering Lab
To mount a share from the Engineering Lab:
Start->All Programs->Utilities->DriveMapper
You can select either 'UW Student Account' to map your UWYO disk share,
or 'Batcivet' to mount the Department shares. Use your UWYO account name
and password, not the Engineering one.
The drives you have mounted should be visible in
'[Right Click]Start->Open Windows Explorer'.
Accessing the Department Linux servers
The name of the main Department server is 'bat'. You can access it by
using the nxclient. In our student lab:
Start->All Programs->NX Client for Windows->NX Client for Windows
In the engineering lab:
Start->All Programs->Communications->NX Client for Windows
The first time you run the client, it will ask questions to set up a
profile that gets saved.
Session - this is a name assigned, I use bat
Host: bat.uwyo.edu

I find changing 'KDE' to 'GNOME' works better. GNOME uses less animated
graphics that tend to be slow over a remote connection.
On the login screen, you should use your Linux password. If you haven't
set one yet, see Larry Oolman - EN6016.
To log off from the GNOME environment, click on the 'System' tab at the
top and select 'Log Out'. If you wish to leave your session running and
want to connect to it again later, click on the 'X' at the upper right and
select 'Disconnect'. Clicking on 'Terminate' will log you out of your session.
Note: disconnecting a session sometimes leaves a corrupt session and you will
need to see Larry Oolman be able to log in again. Logging off or shutting
down your Windows PC without terminating or disconnecting the Linux session
will almost certainly leave a corrupt session.
Installing the nxclient on your own Windows computer.
From a browser go to
ftp://cat.uwyo.edu/pub/permanent/nx
There are two installation programs in this directory, the nxclient and
the fonts.
Accessing the Department Linux computers from off camplus.
Most of the Department Linux computers are not visible from off campus.
Accessing them requires using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). See:
http://www.uwyo.edu/infotech/services/network/vpn/
If you wish to mount shares on \\batcivet, including your Linux
home directory, it is neccessary to log into the expanded vpn:
https://wyosecure.uwyo.edu/expanded
and then 'Start' the 'Network Connect'.
